In the 1950s, Beating the Princess-wife (put to the screen in 1954) and Lady Jellyfish, both the theater's productions enjoyed great popularity among the people. Since 1961, the Theater has put to the stage a large number of plays, including traditional plays Small Banquet, Court Murder, Estimate Grain, Beating the Princess-wife, Verdict of Wise Lord, Bridge over the Gold Water, Picture of Wealth and Rank, Story of Tung Leaf, Preaching the Son, and newly created plays Blossom of the Oil lamp, Yellow River, Our Mother, Faith of the Loyal Servant, Tale of Royal Tablet, Passion of Pear Flower, Grievance of the White Silk Satin. The Theater toured Australia and was invited to Hong Kong to attend the first "Exhibition of China Local Operas and Folk Songs".
Over the 40 years since its establishment, the troupe has formed its artistic advantages and distinctive features with a strong cast and generations of promising young artists. More than 30 artists have won the Gold Disc Award, Plum Blossom Award, Wenhua Award and Gold Triangle Award. Modern opera Blossom of the Oil Lamp was Given the Nomination Prize of 1995's Cao Yu Drama Literature Award. The Theater now has a number of famous artists including Wang Aiai, Tian Guilan, Li Guilian, and Song Zhuanzhuan.
